Origins of fear of flying

Fear of flying is not something you’re born with, but something you develop, usually through bad experiences of flights with lots of turbulence or mechanical failure, although sometimes there may also be anxiety on other forms of transport or claustrophobia in general. With many clients, flying is something they enjoyed and looked forward to as children, and the fear was developed later on, as a result of a bad flight or usually a series of them.

Effectiveness of hypnotherapy for fear of flying

In my experience, fear of flying is actually one of the easiest fears to work with through hypnotherapy, probably because usually we can easily identify and neutralise the events which caused you to develop the fear in the first place. You may find this hard to believe if you are experiencing fear of flying, but that has been my experience. Many issues are complex to deal with, and stem from a variety of sources, but fear of flying seems to be one that is relatively pure and specific, and because it’s often developed later in life, it’s not usually that deep-seated.

Airline courses for fear of flying

The courses that airlines provide to help with fear of flying are useful in that they give you a much greater understanding of what goes on, but naturally the people I see who have been through the courses are the ones for whom it hasn’t been effective enough. This is because fear is a survival mechanism which can become linked to particular surroundings or triggers, and so conscious thought is only useful in neutralising it if and when you no longer believe that something is harmful.

How we tackle fear of flying with hypnotherapy

The approach I use is to break the issue down into smaller pieces, which can be much more easily dealt with, since there are usually a number of incidents which have triggered the fear, and if we address those incidents one by one with hypnotherapy the fear can gradually and gently be dispersed and let go. Because of the good response rates to hypnotherapy with this condition, fear of flying usually requires fewer sessions than is the case with many other issues.
