Hypnotherapy and sexual issues

If sexual issues are due to emotional or psychological causes, then hypnotherapy can often help. Issues can range from erectile dysfunction (ED) to premature ejaculation (PE) in the case of men, to low libido (lack of sexual desire) or difficult or absent orgasm in the case of women. Usually, by the time people come to see me, they have checked with their doctors to rule out any physical problem.

Male sexual issues

In many cases of premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction, the issue has to do with previous unsuccessful experiences with sexual partners, in other words performance anxiety. In addition, the anxiety itself interrupts normal sexual functioning. If you think about it, when you are stressed, the body is in alarm mode and programmed for survival, so having children or being focussed on sexual feelings takes a low priority. We can use hypnotherapy to help to neutralise any previous discouraging emotions and events, and in a relaxed state, your chance of a return to more natural functioning can be expected.

Fertility and libido issues in women

The libido (sex drive) in women has a similar psychological dynamic to the male one, in that stress will reduce the libido, and relaxation will usually increase it.  Women’s bodies, of course, have a different hormonal balance from men’s. In the case of fertility issues in women, the mental and emotional perception of stressful situations releases cortisol. Cortisol controls the release of sex hormones, so it is unsurprising if your hormonal balance is disturbed as a result of being under stress.

Infertility treatment with IVF can in itself be very stressful, both the process itself, as well as financially in some cases. Often there is time pressure, and the desire for a viable pregnancy in itself creates further stress. Again, emotional tension is likely to lead to a hormonal environment which is not favourable to pregnancy. As I outlined above, if by feeling stressed you are giving signals to your body that you are in danger, it will make the chances of conception less likely for good survival reasons.

How we can use hypnotherapy to help you with sexual and fertility issues

If we can use hypnotherapy to increase relaxation and feelings of safety, then we are creating a much better environment for conception to take place. It is probably for similar reasons that libido drops off in women (and men) when under stress. Survival takes precedence over procreation. If we can take you out of survival mode, the chances of conception and increased fertility will be much higher.

Effectively, what we are aiming to do is to reduce your emotional arousal and stress, by neutralising any past events and developing a routine for you with which you can maintain a relaxed state, thus giving yourself the best chance to get the results you want.

More technical explanation

Our autonomic (automatic) nervous system has two branches, called the parasympathetic and sympathetic. The parasympathetic branch has to do with rest, repair and relaxation; the sympathetic branch is in effect our alarm system.  These systems affect digestion, our bowels and bladders, contraction or dilation of the pupil of the eye and various other functions.

Both systems are running all the time, but one is more dominant when we are tense or relaxed. For sexual arousal, the parasympathetic (relaxation) needs to be dominant, and at orgasm the sympathetic nervous system (tension) dominates. If you are anxious or otherwise emotionally aroused, normal sexual functioning will be disturbed. Hypnotherapy will therefore have a positive effect simply by relieving the stress.
